Chasing the Draft – December 6th Edition

By Bob Trask – The Montreal Canadiens are still hovering around the .500 mark after playing 3 of 4 games on this Western road trip. They remain ahead of Ottawa, Washington, Vancouver and Buffalo when it comes to percentage of points earned but the canary in the coal mine is the Habs’ goal differential when compared to these teams. They have significantly poorer numbers and that could be a harbinger of things to come as it relates to the overall standings and the draft.

My reverse power rankings tries to take the points percentage and the goal differential into account and the results currently have Montreal sitting in 12th spot overall when it comes to the entry draft. They also have Florida’s 1st round pick which slots in at 18th overall in the reverse power rankings.

Should all four teams with better goal differentials than Montreal and who are relatively close in points percentage overtake the Canadiens in the standings, Montreal would have the 8th overall pick without taking into account any good luck or bad luck at the draft lottery.

Last week I had the Canadiens at #15 and #18 overall, so they have crept up three spots in the draft rankings with their own pick and remained at the same level with Florida’s pick. As a result, the updated chart will only include players ranked at #12 overall. For a look at the #18 ranked players you can refer to last week’s article.
