By JD Lagrange – The Montreal Canadiens have announced having cut a total of 23 players from their main training camp. All are set to report to the Laval Rockets’ training camp, set to begin on Sunday.
I will spare you the long list of players cut as it’s on the Canadiens’ website. But the most notorious, and/or the ones who stood out the most are:
- Gianni Fairbrother
- Jan Mysak
- Joël Teasdale
- John Parker-Jones
- Miguël Tourigny
- William Trudeau
- Brett Stapley
Then, they were 45
Starting for an original total of 74 players invited, this feels like the song “99 Bottles of Beer“, doesn’t it? But with the most recent cuts, it means that there are still 45 players remaining at the main camp. Including injured players, the breakdown is 27 forwards, 13 defensemen and five goaltenders (including Carey Price). They are, in alphabetical order:
Forwards
Josh Anderson | Evgenii Dadonov | Rafaël Harvey-Pinard | Anthony Richard |
Joel Armia | Jonathan Drouin | Emil Heineman | Nate Schnarr |
Owen Beck | Christian Dvorak | Mike Hoffman | Xavier Simoneau |
Alex Belzile | Jake Evans | Filip Mesar | Juraj Slafkovsky |
Cole Caufield | Brendan Gallagher | Michael Pezzetta | Mitchell Stephens |
Kirby Dach | Brandon Gignac | Rem Pitlick | Jesse Ylönen |
INJURED | Paul Byron | Sean Monahan | Nick Suzuki |
Defensemen
Justin Barron | Jordan Harris | Mattias Norlinder | Chris Wideman |
Madison Bowey | Otto Leskinen | David Savard | Arber Xhekaj |
Kaiden Guhle | Mike Matheson | Corey Schueneman | |
INJURED | Joel Edmundson | Logan Mailloux |
Goaltenders
Jake Allen | Sam Montembeault | Kevin Poulin | Cayden Primeau |
INJURED | Carey Price (LTIR) |
The Canadiens have lost their first three pre-season games, having used the bare minimum number of NHL players required by the league in each one of those games. They now have five games remaining in pre-season, which they will be playing in an eight day stretch. The regular season is set for October 12th, when Martin St-Louis’ troop will be hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre.
